All o3 Systems are covered by General Public License (GPL), either Version 2 or 3.

In a nutshell, this kind of license gives the user:

 

  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

 

These are for sure important features, but it is important to highlight that the GPL license could be a limit when the software is used inside critical environments.

Indeed the license clearly point out that:

"THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR THE PROGRAM, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. EXCEPT WHEN OTHERWISE STATED IN WRITING THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND/OR OTHER PARTIES PROVIDE THE PROGRAM “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Since most of the software offered by o3 Consortium is considered as "Medical Device", to overcome this limitation, the members of the "o3 service provider community" have the capability to cover the software with the most common certifications:

 

  • CE marking
  • FDA certification
